Newborn Baby Essentials: Bonding with your baby through scent

On occasion, I’ll pass a rose garden and I’m filled with the scent of my grandma. Or walk into Jimmy’s closet when he’s on the road just so I can smell him when I miss him.  I know you’ve all had experiences like this that highlight the power of the sense of smell.

Twelve months ago, Aspen and I left my sister’s apartment in Boston after completing our first solo mother/daughter trip. Less than a week later, my sister told me that I’d left a clean burp cloth that smelled just like Aspen. It reminded her of Aspen so much that she put it in a plastic baggy to preserve “the scent of baby Aspen” so she could open the baggie and be reminded of Aspen when she missed her. This scent was the amazing smell of Dreft baby detergent.

I’ve used Dreft since before Aspen was born because my mom recommended it. My grandma (the rose garden scent) even used it on my mom, aunts and uncles. For more than 80 years, Dreft detergent has been created exclusively for babies to take care of their delicate clothes and fabrics and is the #1 Dermatologist Recommended for baby clothes. Dreft is also the #1 pediatrician-recommended baby detergent.

Yes, it’s gentle, hypoallergenic and safe for baby’s skin, but what keeps me hooked is the iconic scent: I believe it helps not only me, but my husband, step kids and clearly my sister in Boston, bond with my babies.

Other parents agree because a recent Dreft survey found that 8 out of 10 parents feel that using Dreft can make them feel more bonded with their baby.  And when they are apart, 87% of parents agree that the Dreft scent helps them feel more connected and closer to their little one.

As I prepared the twins nursery and washed all of their brand newborn clothing items the scent of Dreft brought me back to when Aspen was a new baby. This made me feel as if I was bonding with my twins even before they were born.

I am cautious of what I put on my babies’ skin but I also want to wash baby clothes in something that’s effective.  Dreft purtouch is 65% plant based and I highlight this because I think I’m about a 65% natural mom. For instance, I try not to bathe my babies unless absolutely necessary in order for them to preserve their natural oils. But even so, my stepkids are always asking if I’ve just bathed the twins because they are smelling like Dreft purtouch.

I always balance effectiveness versus natural and that’s why Dreft is a newborn essential for me. Those of you who’ve held my babies or who’ve used it yourself know exactly what I’m talking about, and for moms to be, you will soon know as well – don’t just rely on me, ask your friends, too!

    1. AGRE. People can just be plain awful and cruel. They need to find happiness and quit putting other people down and judging them.

  2. I am so enjoying your journey. I also believe what you say about the scent. They have so many more new things out when you have a baby now. I wish you all the best.
